Many people asked will Gelang Patah be the burial ground for Lim Kit Siang and the answer is a positive yes. The reason is simple – Kit Siang is just a leader of a Chinese chauvinistic party who does not service his constituency where he contested as he is too busy ‘barking’ the purported struggles of the race when the people including the Chinese are busy making ends meet in their daily life. Kit Siang was once needed by the Chinese to voice their grievances in Parliament where at that time the country has no technology that can relay their grievances to the leadership. The party that represent them in the ruling coalition MCA was doing a good job but there were constraints – considering Malaysia is multi-racial where the needs of one’s race must go hand-in-hand with the needs of other races. That is called sharing and distributing equally depending on the number and locations. In today’s Malaysia, with the advent of technology – emails, twitter, facebook and whatsapp and so on – the voices in Parliament are no longer needed much because the ruling party can listen and communicate with the people directly through the devices mentioned. Communication is no longer confined but more widespread now and no one race or person will feel left out or sidelined as the modern technology devices can highlight their plight loud and clear and direct to the leadership.
Given such background, Kit Siang is indeed ‘killing himself’ if he thinks the Chinese community still needs his voice in parliament by contesting Gelang Patah. Miscalculation is always the weakness of leaders who are too ego to admit they may be wrong despite being experienced and exposed. The lack of deep analysis on today’s technology to relay one’s grievances and make them stand out to be heard has Kit Siang in a fixed. To opt out would be shameful and he is already in the ring waiting for the bell to ring to start the fight.
And he is not alone as his counterpart Anwar Ibrahim is also in a shaky position in Permatang Pauh, Penang. Anwar felt the ground shaking but he has no choice because there is no place for him to contest with more and more of his party supporters leaving. Anwar’s calculation that Permatang Pauh is still with him is just an imagination of yesterday’s scene and the current situation has overtaken yesterday’s events
